Glossary of rain & sound

the words of the rainy world, defined plainly

Short, quotable definitions for the terms that come up around rain, ambient sound and this site — from pluviophile and petrichor to the colors of noise.

Pluviophile
A lover of rain; someone who finds joy and peace on rainy days. From Latin pluvia (rain) and Greek -phile (lover of).
Petrichor
The earthy smell after rain falls on dry ground — largely plant oils and the compound geosmin released from soil, carried on the damp air.
Geosmin
The organic compound produced by soil bacteria that gives petrichor its earthy character. Human noses are astonishingly sensitive to it.
White noise
Steady sound with equal energy at every audible frequency; bright and static-like. Strong masker of sharp sounds.
Pink noise
Broadband sound whose energy falls as frequency rises — softer than white, the natural shape of steady rain and surf.
Brown noise
Even bass-heavier than pink; a deep rumble named after Brownian motion. Almost no treble.
Green noise
An informal term for noise centered on the middle frequencies, often described as sounding like flowing water; definitions vary.
Sound masking
Raising the steady background level so sudden sounds — doors, voices, traffic — stand out less and disturb you less.
Loop fatigue
The moment a repeating audio clip becomes noticeable: once the brain learns the seam, it anticipates it, and the sound turns into a distraction.
Generative audio
Sound synthesized live by rules rather than played from a recording, so it can run indefinitely without repeating. Everything on rainrainsound is generative.
Web Audio API
The browser technology that lets a web page synthesize and process sound in real time — the engine underneath this site.
Synodic month
The ~29.53-day cycle of the Moon’s phases. The night scene here computes tonight’s true phase from it.
Pomodoro
A focus method of timed work blocks and short breaks — commonly 25 minutes on, 5 off. Built into the focus timer.
Circadian rhythm
The body’s roughly 24-hour internal clock, nudged by light and routine; dim light and steady sound in the evening work with it.
Vantablack mode
This site’s pure-black screen mode: on OLED displays the pixels switch fully off — true darkness and lower battery use.
Binaural beats
An auditory effect from playing slightly different tones in each ear. Not used here; rainrainsound relies on masking and natural sound instead of entrainment claims.
